Soumik’s story begins with his first assignment from the Times of India’s East Kolkata Plus. He was entrusted to cover an issue that many had ignored: the absence of street lighting near City Center 1. People hurried through that stretch every evening, hesitant and wary, their faces tense under the shadows. Children clung to their parents, elderly folk stumbled in the gloom, and women avoided the area after dusk. Yet, it seemed like no one was paying attention.
Determined to bring the truth to light, Soumik spent hours walking the stretch, speaking with shopkeepers and commuters, taking photographs that captured not just the darkness, but also the hope and resilience of those who called this neighbourhood home. His photographs told stories. They reflected the vulnerability, the unspoken fear, and the steadfast spirit of the people who refused to let darkness control their lives. The next morning, the entire city witnessed Soumik’s striking visuals at the front page of the Times of India’s East Kolkata Plus.
The impact was immediate. Residents who had long felt unseen finally had their story told. For them Soumik had emerged as the metaphor for light itself. After that, Soumik never looked back, exploring various genres of photography and propelling his career forward. He has captured many notable photos, each with its own unique incidents and stories. Here are three of the most remarkable ones.
Chapter 1: The Fashion Revolution with Lakme Fashion Week (2014-2015)
By the mid-2010s, the pulse of Indian fashion was beginning to beat ever louder, capturing the world’s imagination. At the heart of this creative surge was Priyangshu Majhi, an emerging fashion designer whose innovative vision was set to turn heads across runways and redefine style. It was at this exciting crossroads that our journey intersected with his. In 2014-15, as Priyangshu prepared for his debut at Lakme Fashion Week, the atmosphere was electric with possibility. He invited us for a behind-the-scenes, exclusive photo shoot—an opportunity that would become a defining chapter in our storytelling journey.
The shoot was more than just a series of photographs; it was about capturing the energy of creation, the nervous anticipation backstage, and the transformative power of fabric and vision. As models walked the ramp in Priyangshu’s bold designs, our lenses found moments of vulnerability and triumph, the gleam in the designer’s eye, and the applause of a crowd that knew they were witnessing something special. Our photo story didn’t just chronicle fashion—it became a reflection of contemporary Indian aspiration and artistry. The coverage received immense appreciation, helping Priyangshu Majhi and his creations go viral across India.
Chapter 2: Lights, Camera, Documentary – The Babaji Story (2021-2024)
Fast forward to 2021, our passion for impactful storytelling opened a new door: a documentary proposal from a reputed directory. The subject was both intriguing and challenging—a docu-narrative on “Babaji,” a revered godman whose enigmatic life had inspired faith and curiosity in equal measure. We accepted to bring this extraordinary story to the screen. By 2023, the camera started rolling. We travelled across ashrams, temples, and villages, documenting moments of devotion, glimpses of personal transformation, and community narratives that spoke of faith and skepticism. The result was more than a biography—it was an exploration of Indian spirituality in modern times, seen through multiple perspectives.
On 14 February 2024, the film released, sparking thoughtful conversations about faith, leadership, and social change. The response was overwhelming, earning praise for its balanced storytelling and compelling visuals. The documentary went on to be selected for broadcast at the prestigious Melbourne India Film Festival, telecasted for a month to a global audience. Feedback from viewers in Australia, India, and beyond revealed how universal some stories truly are. Being part of the Melbourne India Film Festival brought recognition not just to our documentary skills, but to the power of rooted, authentic Indian storytelling. For us, it was proof that local voices can find global resonance and that the world is eager for nuanced, well-told stories from India. As our journey unfolds, with each milestone, from Kolkata’s lamplit lanes to international film festivals, we remain committed to illuminating untold narratives, taking you, our readers and viewers, along for every chapter.
